tubes are fine if used with a dedicated macro lens.

i have a true macro lens
kenko tubes
nikon 1.7 converter
tubes change color and brightness , in my case
infinity becomes half a meter
EXIF is not passed correctly
tubes give better quality then my 1.7 converter but thats the only thing
i'm gonne use lens only for a while

Good shots !
Agree with Paddler, I have no problem using ext tubes on a lens but don't like TC's.

think its your lighting thats the problem, not the tubes. all the fine detail is being blown out by harsh light!
need more diffusion on your flash
