Hover thinks about Cover! (Heliophilus pendulas)

Here is a hoverfly on the paving stone which edges my small garden pond today - and I figured he may have been pond-ering looking for some cover from the heat of the afternoon sun!

This is of course a lucky shot, the hover was all over the place and quite active - perhaps the paving stone was a little bit to warm under the feet and it had to keep taking off every now and again to allow its toes to cool off (do they have toes? I think not!) or whatever is on the end of their legs!

This one is a Heliophilus pendulas, sometimes referred to as a sun fly.
