I really would like if someone could in a few easy steps explane how to do the effect of a subject appear to jump out of the frame of an image. Would really enjoy simple steps (I'm using CS4 ext) to get me going in the right direction

Would really be grateful if yet tonight.................... :help

You need to mask/extract or somehow select the part of the image that you wish to jump out of the frame - usually with a layer mask.

Then you would dupe the original flat image into a layer and apply the mask so that the area in question "jumps out".

Then on the lower original flat background image, turn it into a layer and create the rectangular frame that is smaller in area than the area that jumps out, again this is usually done with a layer mask.

On DPReview retouching forums, this is the flavour of the month, known over there as OoB or "Out of Bounds". Many topic threads over there have OoB or Out of Bounds in the title, more in-depth info can be found there if needed.

Often the use of perspective and shadows is used so that things look more 3D. Not every image lends itself to this treatment.

Here are some great tutorials done by Surrator. http://www.logicscape.com/oob_tutorials/
This should be all you need to get started.
    (OOB) "out of bounds"
"I've been OOBing" is the most viewed thread in the Other Cool Shots forum on dgrin. Over 36,500 times!!!
I just bumped it so that it shows up on the first page or just use Richards link above.
