Hardened man, newborn kittens

The kittens pictured were just discovered. They had spent the previous month or two of their lives in the darkness of the bat infested attic of a barn. This is literally their first 20 minutes of experiencing the world outside of their small, sheltered dark attic.

Ed has lived on a ranch his entire life. You can tell by just looking at him he has seen some stuff in his day. His hands are rugged and huge, a testimony to the many brawls he has been in and broken fingers he has gone through. Ed remembers his dads form of population control on the ranch and the unlucky cats that met the wrath of his father....Ed's reaction to these newly found kittens is quite remarkable...

I sense a man who has had, and continues struggling with life, yet displays great compassion for these small defenseless creatures.

The last image alone tells the whole story.

    Great work.

Oh, I hate to get philosophical here, but...

Most folks would see this as a juxtaposition because they have a false preconception that a strong, tough guy has no compassion or gentlness in him. But that's not true; it's not surprising that a tough, strong guy could be charmed by a couple of kittens and not be afraid to show it in photos.

His greatest strength is his ability to show gentle compassion toward others.

    Terrifically shot series, Jimmy.

I didn't think that Jimmy was specifically making a blanket generalized statement about all tough guys as much as he was wanting to share a little about Ed and highlighting some of the personality with words that was captured in the images. Just my pov though- I loved the set, and learning the story behind the images.
