What did you use for lighting?
If I'd had a single off-camera flash, then I'd have used the on-camera pop-up flash as a fill-in to remove the shadows from the eye sockets. The picture looks as if it was lit from above, and if that's the case, how did you tilt the flash to bounce it? …and if you were using an off-camera flash bounced, then why not just use the pop-up for fill? (that's assuming you were using your EOS 40D)…
…but perhaps I've got hold of the wrong end of the stick!

BTW: I'd have straightened him up a bit - as shown he looks as if he's tilted backwards which makes him look a bit "heavy"…
