Has anyone ever experienced this problem before? I just won a 580EX on Ebay where the red plate has gone missing. Seller says it's cosmetic and the flash is perfectly fine, but I'm trying to figure out where replacement parts might be bought.

Is this what you're missing - from ebay

and know that is not cosmetic..........he should reimburse for this part.

Flash might fire ok, but with out that filter it probably will not focus assist properly as the camera is set up
to receive IR signals, not white light...............................

Maybe Ziggy will weigh in here

Like Art said, I would not consider that red bezel to be optional. It is both a red filter and a protection for the optical elements underneath. If you purchased the flash knowing that the piece was missing then you can't hold the seller responsible, but if you were not aware of the missing piece I think that is grounds for a grievance against the seller.

AF should function OK without the bezel but the light will seem bright for human subjects.

Yeah, it was stated in the auction, so I got no beef with that. Although the seller stated it was a minor cosmetic problem and does not affect the performance, which threw me off a bit. I wasn't sure if indeed it was a minor cosmetic problem or not.

    Glad I could help.

The auction states that it is only a cosmetic feature....that should be enuff for a full refund if you want to fill an ebay and paypal grievance.
It was mis represented to say the least and before the seller can pull it down I would make a screen shot of the page for proof as to what the
auction actually stated.......doing that has helped me in the past with grievances with ebay and paypal...it is hard to not believe a screenshot.
