SB900 and SB600

This is going to sound really really silly. I have the SB900 and want to get a wireless trigger for it. I would also like to get one more flash, but am hesitant to put down that amount again so soon and get another 900. Can I get the 600 and use them both together wirelessly? Can anyone lend their expertise?

Thanks in advance,

Julie

If your camera has the ability to command remote flashes with their pop-up flash (not all Nikons do), you should be able to control both 900 and 600 using wireless simultaneously (or even both at the same time! rolleyes1.gif )

The SB-600 can't be used as a commander flash unit, however it can be used as a remote flash.

I have an SB600 & SB800, and using the the Nikon CLS (Creative Lighting System) they're so easy to use with my D300…

I'd look around for a (or a couple of) used SB600s…

Will has it right. I believe that you can use your Nikon D90 to act as "Commander" for your SB-900. The D40x does not have that capability. If you did get an SB-600 you could use the SB-900 mounted to either body and the SB-900 could be the Commander for the SB-600.

I believe that the Nikon SU-800 wireless Remote Commander and/or Sigma EF 530 DG Super flash with Nikon i-TTL can also be used as a Nikon Commander for a compatible wireless flash unit.

If you have a D90 you can use the pop up flash as the commander and remotely trigger both the SB900 and SB600. You can also turn up or down their power right from your camera and not even walk over to the flashes. It is really pretty cool. You just need to play with it to see how it works. At certain times you do want on board flash and can use the SB900 as the commander for the 600 or any number of 900s 600s or 800s.

I have both flashes and they are both great for different reasons. I like the SB600 as a pocket flash. It is small enough to carry in cargo pants and whip it out as needed for handheld off camera flash. It really kicks ass to be that streamlined and cordless.

I often use my SB600 as part of a CLS setup for a hair light or low power background light. It can be used easily as a remote, but cannot be used as the on camera commander. You can use the pop-up flash on your D90, SB800, SB900 or SU800 for this purpose.
