I didn't think I got anything worthwhile on the egret capture until I reviewed it on the PC. That BG is almost the way it was...provided by deep shadows from a distant tree line. I only had to get rid of a few bits where the light snuck through.

Very nice composition and you nailed the exposure on two difficult subjects: the white and black birds...
