Good shots. The first is a broad-winged hawk and the second is a kingfisher. How did you ever get so close to him? I've been trying to get him for the last year and I have never been able to get close enoiygh for a shot even with the 500.

Harry..which one do you mean? The king fisher?
Yhe kingfisher flew right past me and I watched where he landed. I think the only reason this came out at all was because the light was good where he landed. This is a 100% crop. Never saw this bird before, and saw him twice this evening!he was on the eagles dead tree also..
Nice couple of shots, Trish. Wow..kingfisher. I've only seen pics of these birds. I'm slowly being tempted to move back to the East coast of Florida. :

Thanks. Move from where? We sure do have an abundant variety of birds. I have never captured these 2 before.

I'm on the gulf coast. Between Sarasota and Venice. I use to live on the East coast over in Stuart. I moved because it was too crowded. Little did I kjnow what I was getting into here. One of the fastest growing counties in Florida. Grrrrr. Damn snowbirds. :uhoh (hides his Illini blue & orange t-shirts)
Yep, the kingfisher. He has been taunting me for a year now, He always stays just far enough away so that I can't get a decent shot. He knows about cameras too. Since I got the 500 he stays further away than when I was shooting with the 300.

Harry,
All I know is that if I had the 500 with me I would have gotten a perfect shot! Sorry you weren't there. last night he totally wanted me to shoot him! You know how slow I am and this guy hung out waiting for me to change lenses and shoot 6 shots..Here is the other shot I got of him, but light was going very quickly and last shot of the evening. I don't know why I waste my gas to go up during the day...evening IS so much better...

Mike,
It's pretty crowded over here now too! They are building so much you would think the homes are free! Not so much with snowbirds...but many many more year round residents.
Hi, Trish, I just personally love that Kingfisher. The first shot of him, I don't really like the shot all that well, he is hiding from you a bit, must have landed in a bunch of folliage, whatever, but I just love the way you captured him.
I also like him in the other shot. Cool bird.
Harry, if you can see the bird, I would think you could photograph him. I use my "small" 420 (300 plus) as binoculars to find things I can't "see".
Trish, I have been praised in the evening, praised in the daytime..........who knows. I have personally been happy both times, and been very unhappy with my shots both times.
One thing about evening at magnolia, the light has turned bad on me, but that is where the birds appear to return to roost at night. So, there is about a 1/2 hr period that these birds are flying in: even in flocks that I have not been able to capture.
I won't stay there, not intentionally, anymore, without my husband there, too. Very spooky...........scary, particularly walking out. Dark path that twists and goes on forever.
What about the wetlands, are they scary latish in the evening?

Ginger,
the kingfisher shot was for ID. I generally try to trash shots that are not up to snuff. For every 30 shots maybe I get 1 keeper. The wetlands has never spooked me..I have been there before sun-up and after sundown. I am in my car most of the time. The only times it ever gets scary for me is when harry shows up:D
