this question has probably been answered times before but I am lousy with searching. Question: is there a way to download an entire chip to an external hard drive and/or a DVD without having is spend time in the computer's memory? (would re-format the chip after this process)(using an iMac)
thanks
Nick

I assume when you say "chip" you mean a memory card of some type from your camera. As far as your iMac is concerned that memory card is the same as an external hard disk (most of the time).

If by memory you mean not first copying the data to the hard disk that is internal to your mac then the answer is yes. Open the "disk" that represents your memory card in the finder. In the "gear" pulldown there is an option to "Burn xxx to disc..." where xxx is the name of your memory card.

If, on the other hand, you mean the computer's random access memory then the answer is no; the data, one block at a time, will be read into RAM from the memory card then out to the disc. The size of the "block" of data is something controlled by OS X.
