You need prop blur. Otherwise very nice.

What do you think is a good shutter speed to start with to get prop blur? I'd like to do it right when I go next month! First we were talking about panning.... now it's prop blur! :D All shutter speed talk! haha

Pics look really good, TPBinKC. I think #7 is my favorite... but because I like F-16s. I hope I'll be able to get some good shots! The air show I am going to is usually pretty big. It's at Scott air Force base in Illinois next month.

Prop blur, about 1/100 to 1/125 should work well. Take a pic, chimp, adjust, repeat. :)

    Taken at 1/125 shutter:

Very nice pic! I hope I can get some good ones too! Thanks for the tip!!

Also, since I only own a 18-200 and a 35mm 1.8..... what lens would you recommend I rent? I was thinking about that 80-400 again that I used for the roadracing. Should get in nice and tight!

Well, I took that shot at 280mm on a Canon 20D so that should give you an idea on what focal lengths you will want.

Thank you. The Blue Angels are flying F-18s but the Thunderbirds do fly the F-16s and I want to get them soon.

Scott Air Force Base in September? Might see you there. My need to visit family in the St. Louis area would be a good excuse to go practice what I have learned.

Thank you and you are absolutely correct about the prop blur. I went there with every intention of getting some shots, chimping and adjusting with each plane. I do that at sporting events so it is not unusual for me but that day I did not do well at it.

Between the heat, the crowds, trying to make sure my 6 year old could see and understand what some of it was, dodging around the two well over 6 feet tall guys that decided they always wanted to drift in front of me and the sun making it hard to see the shots., I did not. Plan to do better at the next one.

All of those except the last one was with a 100-300.

Nice shots, I really like #4. I was going to mention the need for prop blur (I made the same mistake shooting my first airshow last year) but it has already been covered quite nicely. I'm looking forward to shooting the Cleveland Airshow in September with my new T1i
