OK, I understand that conventional wisdom is that you're not supposed to do this. But I really don't understand why it matters in many cases. Surely, the rest of the wheel doesn't have anything important to add here. I'm not trying to be contentious, Wil, just trying to clarify something that has bugged me for a long time. When is it OK and when is it not?
Oh, and I like this shot a lot.

I think it's pretty subjective, which is why I said I wasn't too sure about it.
The picture as is, seems to me to be a bit unbalanced; all the interest is in her, her bike, and what's in front of her; everything behind her is past and forgotten, although there are some interesting patterns.
She's riding out of the picture, seemingly oblivious as to what's ahead, but there's nothing to indicate movement; she seems a bit static, but she has both feet on the pedals. I'm concerned that she's not looking where she's going, and she's likely to hit something if she's not careful! She's heading into the unknown (to us since we cannot see it as it's not in the frame)
It's not necessarily a rule, simply an uncomfortable feeling…

I think you're exactly right!
Looking at it again, I think that perhaps I'm remembering those bike-racks where you slide the front wheel into a slot in the concrete and the bike is held by the front wheel. They work quite well, but the problem occurs when someone sits on the bike while it is in the rack; almost a guaranteed way of destroying the front wheel. It used to (and still does) annoy the hell out of me (being a cyclist and wheel-builder). Perhaps the picture as shown, reminds me of buckled wheels!

never touch em. I'd just mess em up having zero experience and only the
tool to error with. Neat spokes on that cool bike. And the rider... Well
I knew I was pushing it but felt I was going to hear about it either way.
I figured what the hell.
It was the tree that made me dial it just so. I really didn't want to get
nailed with it. So I pushed it and with her looking back that helped.
Plus there was the... Wait, wait, don't leave so fast. Yet there ya go.
I barely got the shot at all. I rarely use burst.
Thanks to all for your thoughts on this one. Nice to have. Maybe I went
the wrong way with the BW. Just a once in awhile maybe it can work thing.

Clip. Right. To square could work.
BW didn't say it and couldn't. But how many exact times does that happen
and one has to fill in. I know thats part of the beauty of BW. Plus ing it in
and you know the score. Love old books for the seeing in just that too.

Right - and screw conventional wisdom. There is no reason not to cut off a bike wheel, a face, a foot, a head, however, there should be a valid visual reason to do so. For example, photos in which someone's toes are chopped off but nothing else make me think the photographer should have framed slightly differently to get the entire foot, because the toes seem to have been chopped due to laziness. On the other hand, a crop from mid-calf down may make perfect sense, and looks much more like something that was thought out.
