Anyone have experience with the new Nikkor 70-200 f2.8 VRII?

I've read about dust inside, threads flaking off, etc. but also that this lens is incredibly sharp, perhaps the best Nikon has produced in this line.

I'm thinking about trading my 70-300 VR for a copy of the new 70-200, so I would like to see some experiences regarding such a move.

Thanks
Tom

Hi TopCat. I've had mine since Thanksgiving last year. It has performed flawlessly and I haven't looked inside to find if there is any "stuff" in it. I have read about "stuff" inside the lens but feel that it is a non-issue and would be covered by Nikon warranty if it was a problem. If it was a problem the internet would be overtaken with BS on blogs & forums. Like any manufacturers new products there are a few that get carried away. This is subjective but I believe the color & contrast is better than the previous version and sharpness across the frame is amazing. Seems like the light transmission abilities of this model are better too, looks like I've gained about 1/2 stop with it. The VR is wonderful and better than the previous model. I'm a shakey old guy and it takes care of my wobbles. Focus speed is fantastic! Some of that speed depends upon the body that is being used. The D80 is not the ultimate sports camera. It just doesn't have the IQ for ultra fast focus (been there done that) but it works very well on the D300 & D3. It will work very well on the D80, just don't expect the speed of light focus on moving objects. I'd buy another 70-200 VRII if I needed one! thumb.gif

I had the 70-300VR and ( though I hate to say never!) never-feel like I got a decent shot out of it. Kept it about 6 mo.s' and let her go!

    Enter the 70-200VRII~

I never read all the stuff you mentioned. I bought a deal in mine open-box from Adorama. Shot a Wedding two weeks after the purchase and it was stellar! Shot a Portrait set the other week and it really set the shots apart from my other/ older work...just fast, consistent...!

I had gotten the 70-300VR to try and reach out to some wildlife shoots, but when it got dark out, even with my D700, it just didn't perform for me~

    Good Luck!

I have mine about a month now and I am very impressed with it. The only drawback is the weight. This is a very heavy lens.

...In other news, WHAT is your sharpening set to? I'm loving the look of the detail in this image. The URL says it's an XL smgmug image. Are you using the standard sharpening algorithm? What res was the original image uploaded at, and what sharpening did you use on that image before uploading?

Anyways, yes the 70-200 mk2 is a gorgeous lens, that is some creamy bokeh too!
