drowning hover?

Saw this hoverfly on a plant in a drainage ditch along a dirt road in the Adirondacks. thought he was happily eating the egg mass of another insect until I looked at the image later. 50D, 100mm L, 36mm tube, flash, 1/200, f/10, ISO 200, handheld with monopod.

I have seen hoverflies drinking from what I assume is spittle bug froth - looks like this one wanted a bath too. - lovely capture.

Thanks. I had no idea that this was what the stuff was. I suspect the hoverfly was at the end of his road.
