My main long lens set up has been the canon 200mm 2.8L with the Canon 1.4x teleconverter. I have my eye on the 100-400 for some time now. Since my wife won't let me have the 600mm I decided to pick one up. These are the first shots taken with it.

Hey, Mark....I wasted my time not getting this lens sooner...now it's my most used by far. You are really going to enjoy it.

Some people complain about dust sucking and getting the zoom tension right. I found neither to be an issue. I just loosen the tension ring and leave the zoom extended to 400 and back off if needs be...but most shots are at 400. I can control the zoom from slapping to it's limit easier this way.

    Thanks everyone!!

Ric, Yeah, I have rented this lens before and liked it and I have heard about the "dust sucking" but am not too worried about it. My thought was, MAYBE I'll sell the 200mm and the extender because the 100mm-400mm covers that range but I would loose the sweetest prime lens I have owned. The new one looks like it's going to perform just fine but I don't think it will spit out the quality that my 200mm does. Plus, if I acquire enough lenses, maybe I can sell them and show the wife that I can afford the 600mm :D Of course she'll say something like "Good, now you can remodel the house" eek7.gif

Then you tell her you really need "X" lens to document the remodeling project.mwink.gif

Mark - The last image is my favorite.

I'm afraid that I went the other way on the 100-400 lens. I had it then got the 500 and the 300 f/4 and found myself using it less and less, so I sold it. I have regretted the decision ever since and will eventually get another.

Selling old gear is how I worked up to the gear I have now. I think I'm going to sell my 200mm for a new kayak. That will open up the photography options.

Congrats on the new glass and an excellent set of images. I love my primes but its nice to have a good zoom to work with. I fidn myself always going back to my 80-400 at some point.
