Is this a hoverfly?

Saw this guy and did not notice until I processed the image all the company he had in the upper right. The eyes and antennae are not similar to other hovers I have seen. I'll post a crop to show that. 50D, 100mm + 36 mm tube, flash, 1/200, f/13, ISO 200, single shot with monopod.

Thanks. After seeing your notes, I did some google searches. I suspect that it is a chrysops--the variety known colloquially in the US as deer flies. The eyes don't quite match the photos I found, but the area in which I caught this guy is full of deer flies. I had no idea that the males don't bite. The females seem to make up for it.
