Image Sizing for uploading to smugmug site

I have always uploaded my photos at full size and resolution to my Smug Mug site. Am very happy with the way they look. I never tick Original Size in my Gallery Settings - I usually tick XLarge because no smaller size is available that I can see.

I have friends telling me I should never upload my photos full size because of image theft, that I am crazy and should upload a smaller lower resolution image.

Recently I started using a small watermark and ticking the prevent right click option (I just updated from a standard site to a power site).
I do realise that if someone wants to take an image illegally they will find a way to do it.

How do other SmugMuggers tackle this dilemma.
Do other users upload smaller size images.

Just wondering
TIA Lesley

The original-sized images are used for printing. They are not available for display online unless you make them available - and you haven't. If you are planning to allow printing, or if you want to print images yourself, continue uploading your highest resolution images.

You should be aware that right click protection is not protection at all. It is merely a very small stumbling block. See ORIGINALS = a gateway to free photos, & right click protection is NOT PROTECTION.

Thank you Denise - have read your link and also Right Click Protection and Image Security on the SmugMug Blog.

One more question - In my Gallery Settings, I have set the largest size as XLarge because that is the smallest option available. This is still a good size image, is it possible to set up a gallery so that only Medium size photos are displayed to viewers.

Thanks for your time - Lesley

You can limit the largest to Medium only with a pro level account. I personally think that's a mistake though - that is really limiting the viewer's experience on your site. Obviously it's your decision, and based on your question it sounds like you would need to upgrade to be able to impose that limit.

From the Security & Privacy section of the help page at http://www.smugmug.com/help/picture-storage:
If you'd rather your visitors didn't have access to view your high-resolution original images, select a smaller size as your Largest size. Power and standard users can block original, X3L, and X2L by choosing to display XLarge as their largest size. Pro users can block even the large size by choosing to display medium as their largest size.
