Magic Drainpipe

I previously had one of these and though it took amazing images in a portrait setting it was wretched at horse shows as it would back focus every time.
I have since sold it to a person who wanted it for landscape but I admit I kind of miss the images it produced.
Did I get a dud? I haven't had that problem before or since so I can't blame myself for it all. People shot show jumping and barrel racing in the 80-200s time so I can't quite completely blame the lens.
Was I asking too much of it? Should I give one another try?

If you dont have the money for the 70-200 2.8, get the magic drainpipe again. Thats my vote.
oh, whatever.. its been almost a year since I've shot canon, so I'm out of the loupe on used lens prices. Also, I was referring to the IS version. Isn't there an IS2 out now? Crazy!
I myself have never quite been sold on the IS lenses. They are nice but not the requirement people think they are IMO.
There are two drainpipes in good shape up on two different forums at 900-950, with what is available now I can't believe they are going for that.
