Had the opportunity to shoot the Bill Grant Classic in Allentown, PA yesterday. First time shooting anything like this. Here are some photos of the women's pre-judging.

Do you mainly shoot figure, or do you shoot the male & female bodybuilders too, and when they're on stage?
I'm a newbie at shooting this stuff too (I also train). I only started shooting them last year. I'm still culling my shots from yesterday, but I have some on my site from last year.
Great job, and I hope you get to shoot MORE shows! It's quite fun and it's nice meeting/networking with the athletes and organizers!

Well, this was my first shoot of a BB show. I was asked to shoot it for a show I'm the photog for--the MMA and Sports Expo Show (Thursday nights at 9:00 on ESPN Radio in Philadelphia and streamed live on their website)--so I wasn't sure what to expect (photographically-speaking) for this show. I used to power lift and have been to shows before but not for a looooooong time. Was a lot of fun. Much easier than shooting MMA! Heck, they actually pose for you!
I may get a little more into it now that I see how easy and fun it is. Bill Grant's place is very close to where I live and he was happy I was shooting his show. Maybe I can get some more work...

! Yeah, it's nice that they stop long enough for you to get pics, unlike MMA fighters. Even when they're onstage doing the mandatory pre-judging poses, or night show routines, you can predict some movements. It can get pretty exciting especially during the night shows, and the "posedowns" the bodybuilders do as well. I've always shot from a slight angle. I seem to capture more that way without needing such a wide angle. If shooting stage images, the lighting can be varied though. I guess similar to your MMA situation, except the fighters aren't covered in Dream Tan! Some competitors can end up looking orange. ! I don't use a flash because I wanted to learn to shoot without one if I end up far away and didn't want to screw up the pro photog's shots.
I hope you do get some work. Even if not "work" per se, it's great practice to attend and shoot if you can. That's how I started. Even though they have their own pro photogs there, I still get business -- not from selling the shots, but by athletes asking me to photograph them individually in the future! It's worth it just networking at the events so the athletes and organizers got to know me.
I may do Martial Arts shooting sometime later, as physically that was my original background (like how you trained in powerlifting). It's nice to see some other fellow photogs venturing into bodybuilding/fitness. Good luck!

Thanks for the kind words.
Yes, many of them were orange. I played with the WB to get that fixed. I'm still working through the mens' pre-judging. Many more men than women of course. In between, I had a paid portrait shoot I just finished editing. Now back to these photos.
I'm sure I can get more of this kind of work. I was speaking to other photogs there who all said the same thing about people needing other shots. That's what I'm sort of hoping for.
As I was the main photog for the show, I could have set up a flash if I wanted to. I wish I had done so, if only for a few shots to see how they'd come out. It was under a white tent so I had a perfect LARGE surface to bounce flash off of. Oh well, next time....

I feel compelled to exhale...
I think you will get residual work, directly or indirectly once you get into it.
Weird story... I got a customer who contacted me via the email form on my site when he saw my competition pics from last July. Turns out I'd photographed his wife, who was onstage. I had no idea. ! HE wanted me to do shoots for his corporate ID package (brochure, website, etc). Get this... He's a Real Estate Agent! How weird is that?? I thought he wanted shoots of his wife doing physique poses or something... Our first shoot was successful last Oct., and be became a repeat customer this past January. Now his wife wants shoots of herself, posing. !
I really learned you can never know who could be looking at your work, and that you can get customers from anywhere; and get work that's not even related to what you'd shot that they were looking at!
