looking into flashes for my40D is there a flash similar to the 580exII?

OK so i am needing to pick up a flash for my 40D. I dont have a ton of extra cash so i cant currently afford the 580EXII. I shoot as an assistant/intern with a wedding photographer and use his equipment so i have used his 580EXII's and i like the results it gives. Is there a cheaper non canon brand flash that can provide similar performance as the 580EXII but not at the cost of it? I will some day upgrade to a canon flash but i just spent most of my extra cash buying a 70-200 f/2.8.

I use the Sigma EF 5xx series DG Super flashes in Canon E-TTL II mount and they do a very nice job when used with an appropriate modifier:
