Is there any way of limiting the max size that your photos will display below the minimum Xlarge in the gallery settingings control panel of a standard account gallery i.e. medium?

No. You need a pro level account to specify medium as the largest size.

From the help page at http://www.smugmug.com/help/picture-storage, in the security and privacy section:
If you'd rather your visitors didn't have access to view your high-resolution original images, select a smaller size as your Largest size. Power and standard users can block original, X3L, and X2L by choosing to display XLarge as their largest size. Pro users can block even the large size by choosing to display medium as their largest size.

Your other option (if you don't care about print ordering) is to only upload medium size images (something slightly larger than 600px on the long edge) in the first place. Uploads will go faster and only mediums will be offered for display then.

Thanks John. I'll do that. I'm not printing from my galleries so I don't have to worry about that.

That's nice to know. The feature page says you can limit larger sizes. I was promoting Smugmug saying you can upload large jpegs and limit viewing to smaller sizes. XLarge is still quite large.
