Full-screen iPhone slideshow not quite full-screen

The last release note had this in it:
A few weeks ago we started working on making iPads and iPhones display your beautiful slideshows in the mobile Safari browser. Add the full-screen slideshow to that list! Try it by hitting the “Slideshow” button at the top of your galleries and be blown away by edge-to-edge photos right in your hands.

So I finally gave that a try today on my iPhone 3GS running iOS4. While it does work quite nicely, I'm not getting edge-to-edge photos. I have no restrictions on the image sizes on my galleries. I've tried more than one gallery with the same result.

I realize that the photos can't go fully edge to edge without cropping in most cases, but even considering that, there's empty space around the photos that could still be used.

When holding the iPhone in landscape mode, here are how the photos look in the slideshow:

And when holding the phone in portrait mode:

The only one that is displayed as I would expect is the third example (phone in portrait mode displaying a landscape photo - it goes all the way to the side edged).

Also, when viewing with the phone in landscape orientation, the address bar at the top is automatically scrolled off the top, which is nice, but in portrait mode this doesn't happen.

I have not had the opportunity to test on the iPad yet though.

    Matt,

Are you first starting the slideshow in one orientation then switching to another while it's playing?

Have you tried another gallery to see if the problem is consistent?

Any more info you may have will definitely help track down this issue!

    Thanks!

I made sure to not switch phone orientation after the slideshow had started. I've tried 5 different galleries so far and they've all been the same. I also tried some of Andy's galleries at moonriverphotography.com and saw the same results there as well.

I tinkered with it a bit more and have some more information: With the phone in landscape mode, while the slideshow is running, if I scroll the page down so that I can see the browser address bar at the top, then the photo exactly matches with the bottom of the screen. It seems like it's calculating the size of the photo as if the address bar was always in full view, even though it's automatically scrolling up off the top when the slideshow starts.

I'm not sure that helps explain anything when the phone is in portrait mode though. In that case, the address bar IS visible when the slideshow starts but then portrait photos are still as big as they could be (although landscape photos do seem to fit the width correctly).

I tried on the iPad now and the behavior is slightly different. The photos do correctly fill in as much space as possible, however on the iPad the browser header is not part of the scrollable region and is always visible. On the iPhone the browser header automatically scrolls off the top to leave more space for the content. This appears to trip up the photo size calculation in the slideshow.
