Trouble with keywords and International (Latin) Characters

Hello,

I am new to Smugmug and I can tell that I have been happy with what I have seen so far.

Unfortunately, I've been having some trouble with keywords and international (Latin) characters.

1) All photos uploaded with Latin Characters embedded into IPTC fields gets chopped off. For example: I have uploaded a picture with the following caption Férias em Cancun (Vacations in Cancun -- this is Portuguese, not Spanish), and Keywords Férias Cancun. Captions were processed alright, but keywords got changed to Frias Cancun (Which means Cold Cancun). One interesting thing also to mention is that the keyword field on smugmug's interface was also chopped off (means, if I try to edit the keywords, the ones that come in the box are chopped off also).

2) I uploaded photos without any IPTC data. I entered the keywords and captions myself using smugmug's interface. The system stored the keywords correctly (if I try to edit the keywords, they show up again fine), but the webpage shows the keywords chopped off (either at the photo page or keywords page).

I can believe that there are no other customers that use also international characters. I guess there might be even more complexes cases out there, like for example Russian using Cyrillic, Chinese, japanese, Hebrew, etc. How are other customers handling this problem ? Is it Smugmug's problem ? (I personaly think so -- looks like a bug to me)

Also, I would like to add also that I found 2 possible bugs. I have reported them by email, but there has been already 2 days and I got no answer.

1) smugdav's interface should be read only (it says so in the web page). I tryed then to delete a file. Amazingly, it did. The photo is gone now. Now, even though I removed all photos from my account, it still says I have 1 photo in the system. I guess that the file was actually removed, but somehow the statistics in the control panel got confused by it.

2) gallery keywords are not taking composite word keywords: for example, I created a gallery and assigned the following keywords: Montagem "As Emilys". if I hit update and then go back to configure the gallery, the composite keyword "As Emilys" is gone, and only Montagem is left there. If I try Montagem As Emilys (without the quotes), then it works OK, but then it is not what I wanted (I wanted "As Emilys" as one single composite keyword).

Thanks,
Marcelo.

Welcome to Smugmug, Marcelo. I am having exactly the same problem with accented characters in Spanish. They display OK in the gallery but are eliminated in the keyword list. ne_nau.gifdunno

    Thanks for the reply.

So I guess that makes already 2 of us. I am sure there are a lot more around.
It would be nice to see Smugmug act upon it.

Hopefully. After I saw your post this morning, I decided to submit a bug report to Smugmug. Here's the response I got a few hours later:
    Hi Richard,

Thanks for contacting smugmug. The engineers were actually working on that yesterday, a few of our Korean and Japanese customers discovered this as well. Hopefully it should be fixed soon, thanks for the bug report!

    -Ben
Let's hope for a speedy resolution.

    Regards,

Man !!! you got lucky. I have been bugging them for about 3 days now. All i got was a "we're still trying to find an answer for you...".

Well, at least looks like they are going to work on it.

Smugmug, do you have any idea on when this is going to be fixed ?

Me too and in the maps as well
    Hi

I want to subscribe to this as well. The accents get removed in the keywords list (mostly in Spanish) but they display ok in the editing part so they are properly stored in smugmug's database.

BTW I use IPTC to upload the keywords in my photos

In a related note a similar thing happens with the maps. In little ballons where pictures are shown the title is not displayed correctly if it contains accents

This problem is with using Ajax to auto update things - we are looking in to ways around it without compromising Ajax, we will keep you posted when we find the solution.

The problems also apply to the comments. Example - this is supposed to be "schön" with the German Umlaut.
When you come up with a fix, will it be possible for you to change the already existing comments in order to improve the readability of them?

    Thanks,
    Sebastian

I agree, this is a broader problem, all accented character (in my case in French) do not show properly. This is a fairly new problem, it didn't exist before, but it is very, very, VERY annoying! I can't properly label my family picture (half of the words in French are accented), and even my pro photo suffer (though the labels are in English, some of the location I shoot at are in Germany or Switzerland). I think that smugmug should take this very seriously and put every effort into solving this problem....
    Cheers
