Hey Dan,
If I didn't see it first, I would hope someone else would have posted it here. 10 yrs since he bought them at an auction. Curious as to what made him look further into the photographer that took them ? Maybe we'll find out soon.
Have a good evening

It's interesting to hear that Adams' family is saying that the negatives are not his, even though experts have 'dated' the negatives to his time, same dimensions, and some with charred evidence as well. Thanks for sharing the updates

Photo Mystery: Ansel Adams Or Uncle Earl?
Interesting discussion at The On Line Photographer.

Very Interesting. Maybe ole Ansel was learning from Uncle Earl
Thanks for sharing

I think the forum was known as AnalogGrin in those days.
On a slightly more serious and speculative note, it seems likely that someone like Uncle Earl, there shooting large format pictures in Yosemite in those days, would have stopped in at the Best Studio (precursor to the Ansel Adams Studio) in Yosemite Valley, and probably crossed paths with Adams.

I remember my grandfather telling me about an old magazine he use to get called the AnalogGrin There were lots of stories about people using these large, heavy cameras climbing all over God's creation to get pictures of trees, the sky and large rocks. Man, what a coincidence
I'm surprised that this is the first we had heard of Uncle Earl. After all, we know of Adams' friendship with Georgia O' Keefe and Alfred Stieglitz, both important people of the time.
If they did cross paths, I would think there would be some correspondence, some type of record somewhere, indicating that, since both men seemed interested in the same subjects, at the same time, using basically the same equipment.
Although, how would one explain the charred negatives if they weren't from the 1937 fire

I was thinking more of a casual meeting in the Best Studio - what photo nut wouldn't have stopped there for a look around? But no matter, it's all speculation. With Uncle Earl and Ansel Adams both gone from this life I suppose the real facts of it all will never be known.
I wish the negs were Adams because it would be great to see new work from his early period and the painter in Fresno could probably use the money but now there are lawyers involved so the story will not likely get any clearer.
I wonder if I should run out and register analoggrin.com or maybe Andy has beat me to it already? <img src="https://us.v-cdn.net/6029383/emoji/rolleyes1.gif" border="0" alt="" >

Remember that two handwriting experts stated that the writing on the envelop belonged to Virginia Adams. That and the charred negatives give credibility that they belonged to Adams. Unfortunately, it will not get any cheaper because of the lawyers. Speaking of which, what is the difference between a vulture and a lawyer ? Removeable wing tips

I wish I knew a lawyer to tell that one to.
Adam's grandson has offered their official response to the negatives here.
The Norsigian group is trying to get big $ each for prints made from the found negatives. I think they are dreaming even if the negs are authentic. Hanging on the wall I have a gelatin silver print made from an original Adams negative by his last darkroom assistant, Alan Ross, and sold through the Adams gallery. $300 framed. Seems like a better deal.
