Lorikeets and Kookaburras

Read Harryb's post on the Whistling Ducks this morning, and was reminded of it ten minutes later. A pair of lorikeets landed on our deck, haven't seen them before, we scrambled for the D70, got a very few disorganised quick shots and they took off to a tree close to the house. They had a good look at the hollow in it as a possible nesting site. (Stand in line lorikeets, five other species have checked this out recently). Within a minute three kookaburras appeared from the forest and just sat and looked like the bully-boys they are. The lorikeets got the message and fled the scene. Whichever birds nest in that hollow tree, the kookaburras have designs on the eggs or baby birds. Their own nest hole is in a tree less than a hundred yards away, and they are possessive of a few acres around it. It was great to see the lorikeets but I doubt if they'll be back - the kookaburras aren't as big as that alligator, but big on attitude.

The two shots of pairs of birds needed working just to make them visible: the kookaburras are dark birds on a dark background, almost invisible in the original. All shot in raw, the single birds are straight from camera, just a small amount of cropping.

My first almost-BIF is a disaster but somehow I like the colour and movement even with the tail and wing off-screen.

    Bother
Good grief what did I do wrong. The side-by-side should have been neatly below one another. And this one disappeared altogether. How can I fix up the side-by-side: I tried but can't "get at it" to sort out??

Another straight from camera, just cropped.

You have such colorful birds where you live! Mine seem camouflaged in comparison.

    Good saves!

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

I have to go to the zoo to get my lorikeet shots. It's still fun though. They're so gregarious. I'm able to go into a netted in area I they just have fun with the people.
