Is a good P&S capable of taking macros like what I'm seeing here.
Is it more skill and daring (no such thing as luck) than equipment?
Do I have a prayer of getting my spouse to agree that I need another camera?

a good macro P&S can do flowers petals and larger insect like dragon flys decently with some practice..as far as smaller insects or flower bits and such..no way. You really need aperture control and/or off camera light capability imo

I think I'd rather swat midges than photograph them...

FWIW, my P&S is a Canon D10 - the waterproof one - it appears to have a decent macro function, but I really haven't tested it.

I've seen some very good closeups/macro shots done with a P&S camera - worth trying it first.
