Took me a while to process this one. Another shot from Scripps Pier.

That's pretty cool! I think it might work better with a more symmetric crop (by removing the pier on the right but still maintaining more or less the same aspect ratio).

Really nice, Dan. I agree with Ron, perhaps try cropping out the rightmost pier to give the picture a little more symmetry. But you need to keep the front wave.

I used the 5D II with 70-200 on board,

    f/32 1/4 sec at 200 mm ISO 100

I played with your suggestions (which are much appreciated) and in the end I really prefer the way it currently is, partly because cropping out the pier on the right and keeping the aspect ratio requires removing some of the tangerine foreground light. I also like the asymmetric imbalance as it seems to create a bit of perceptual tension (whatever that means).:D

    Terrific shot and vision, Dan.

I agree that cropping any other way is not needed in the least.

I would try from the same spot and raise the camera as high as possible and frame it just as you did...the angle may help widen the FG out. Maybe that wouldn't add anything...but I'd see.

I love the way the pier and your processing takes the eye from the front, down the pier and out to the ocean. It's almost surreal.

    This is a nice image.

This is an awesome scene. I'm terrified of the ocean, so seeing this claustrophobic room-like space with the only way out blocked by an incoming wave gives me shivers. Love it!

Danny, this is one sweet, sweet image! clap.gif

When I shot this pier before, and even the night we were down there, I was aiming to get the symetrical shots, but I agree with you, I wouldn't want to lose that color in the foreground!
Nice work, man! I think you out did me on my own home turf! :D

Stunning shot, Dan--like the colors and the composition. The wave spray on the left gives some nice action too. Wonderful stuff!

I love the comp, with the pilings as a leading line, and the "door" to the calm ocean...

    Just lovely!
