So the day started out... I was visiting my mom in Chicago. We had signed up for the Kelby Worldwide Photowalk. Our walk was to take place at the Botanical Gardens in North Chicago. Turns out there were heavy storms the night before and the northern highways were flooded, etc. Walk cancelled. :dunno We found this out as we were heading into town.

Instead we decided to go shoot downtown just for kicks. And low and behold on Wacker Drive, the streets are closed, the area destroyed, they are shooting some scenes for the movie Transformers 3. This summer there will be film crews all over the city, closing streets and making a mess.

Soooo my cancelled walk turned out to be a cool unexpected journey to a city destroyed by large CGI robots.... enjoy!

That's pretty cool! I actually didn't know that movie studios shut down whole areas of major cities to shoot. I guess I just assumed they used abandoned buildings or sets in sunny California.

Any idea how the local commuters feel? lol3.gif

Apparently they are doing this all over the city. Chicago is making a ton of money off of it I am sure. Commuters didn't seem to be bothered. Summer is construction season in the Midwest, so I assume they see it as just another road closure...

What was really cool is in the background the business with the green awnings all tattered is really a functioning 7-11 which they totally destroyed inside and out for the movie. I would be curious to see his compensation and renovation...

It was definitely a cool experience, and a neat thing to happen upon. I will be returning for another brief visit in August, maybe I can catch another setup.

They let people take photos of the set? When they did Transformers 2 at my work place, they totally bum rushed this one guy for shooting. And then told all of us to put away our cell phones, since we could post pics with those.

Oh they were definitely running people out of the area, but I guess it is hard to control 2 city blocks. All of these shots were taken while walking, or moving. Basically from the sidewalk outside the fenced area. They had a ton of staff directing ppl to "take that one great shot and move on". I had to make a few passes... Overall they were pretty cool about it, there were lots of ppl with phone and smaller cameras.

Neat, but that 2nd shot makes me so sad that they'd do that to a poor old BMW. I'll make sure not to let my car see that picture. He'd cry. :cry
