Problem with Mass Delete in LR3

Just finished culling and editing 700+ images and tagged about 290 for rejects. When I did the standard ctrl-backsp to delete the rejects, they all came up but no delete. Shut down LR3 and tried again. Same result. Tried from the Photo menu. Also tried to just delete them (since they were all nicely grouped). I could group them in smaller groups and delete them, but not as a whole.
Has anyone else experienced this? One image had been exported to SmugMug via the publisher route. However, that shouldn't be the issue. When I deleted the group of 40 that had that image, it simply asked me if I wanted to remove it from SmugMug and life moved on.
