Why doesn't deleting a photo cause a link not to work? I've cleared the cache and tried on a new machine that would not have had the image cached.

    Yes.

I deleted that photo from my Smugmug but it still displays using the old link.

How do you delete a photo from Smugmug so links to it no longer work.

I think, intuitively, one would think that when a photo was deleted from Smugmug it would no longer show when pages are loaded containing links to it, no?

    Thanks,

    John

John, We use what is called a CDN to deliver photos and make the sites load faster. Once a photo is deleted, it takes time for it to be removed from the thousands of servers around the world that is hosting your photos. I cannot give you a specific time but hopefully the photo will disappear soon.

Thanks. Looks like it's gone now.

    Next question...

How to replace a photo with new one that old links will load? I tried replace, but that generates a new address, typically a -2 or -3 depending on how many times it's been changed.

You can always replace photo, and the link will still work. The -2, -3 will be handled by our system and we'll still serve up the image.

So, the old picture displaying after I replaced it was a fact of it being cached on the CDN servers? If I had waited long enough, the new photo would have shown with the old link?

Thanks for answering all the questions.
