Harbor Launch

Any thoughts? I love panning, but what's been tough for me is finding the right subject to pan.

Great technique!! I agree, it's hard to find the right subject. Although you're nuts on for the pan, I just don't find it dynamic enough.

IMHO, Very crisp, great use of the pan but not very fresh or eye-popping.. subject is just as important as ability.. but again, very well shot :)

I think the boat idea is good - there are some very sweet boats out there that could really make a nice panning shot. Seems like this photo could use more background blur & movement lines - a longer exposure at a higher aperature. Should help the boat to pop out of the photo more.

How do you pan with a point and shoot like I've got? Panasonic DMC-Tz3?

According to cnet (one of the few sites I trust to have good info & reviews), your camera, the Panasonic DMC-Tz3, has a "Panning" setting on it. Google your camera name & "Panning". Not a bad idea to learn the camera inside & out.

Despite the pan, the image seems very static. Needs some "oomph", whatever that is. I think the framing of the picture is partly to blame. Of course, when I've been trying to pan, framing is usually the last thing on my mind. :lol

I understand that its not a super-dyamic shot, but at the same time I like it a lot because it is a pleasing shot to the eye (could see it in a boat brochure), and it accomplishes panning very well.

I really like the launch as a subject. I don't suppose it ever travels fast enough to create the blur that seems popular. Maybe a lower light shot? closer? I certainly get a sense of movement and the colors and feeling of the boat and foreground are great. The dock isn't the best background ever, do you have more of this boat as it's heading out?
