56--Is this panning?

The shutter speed is 1/800. Much faster than what is normally used. But I was aboard a boat going 30 knots. And this Greater Shearwater was catching up and passing us. So, the bird is in focus, and the ocean is (sort of) out of focus. What do you think, is it panning, or not?

It may be panning, but I have a hard time believing that the bg is "out of focus"-- or at least has some sort of motion blur. Also, it may be an optical illusion on my part, but it looks as though there's some sort of light halo around the bird. ne_nau.gif

That is panning but you did too good a job .The idea as I see it is to have the background showing motion blur and your water is in focus as was my sky .

Looked through my shots from the day and found another one of this bird (that was easily keeping up with our boat) that also caught some interesting blurred bokeh from the spray coming up from the boat.

    Any thoughts?

These are interesting shots but they do not scream panning, even if they technically are panning.

OK, how the heck did you get your name to appear upside down in your sig???

I'd like to see more motion in the background (or foreground), too.
