Change categories in bulk?

I originally set up my SmugMug site with Categories by Subject. Now I want to set everything up in Categories by Year, and use the new Virtual albums or Sharegroups to group similar subjects when needed. But that means reorganizing almost 1000 albums into a new category structure, which is highly tedious.

Is there an easier way to do this, like a tree structure where I can drag albums into the new category? Or am I just dreaming?

Unfortunately you can only update categories on a gallery by gallery basis. http://www.smugmug.com/help/upload-photo

OK, thanks for answering. I was just hoping there was a way. I guess I need to get to work!

There is no easy way within SmugMug itself, but some of the external tools will allow bulk changes. My personal preference is the SmugBrowser extension for Firefox. Many people also use the Star*Explorer program.

Unfortunately, I don't think either of these programs will allow you to change categories with drag/drop or in bulk the way they asked. They might be more efficient than the Smug web interface for doing them one at a time though.

You're right, but I knew I'd done it recently with a couple galleries... Turns out I did it on SmugMug itself.

Go to the gallery settings for any gallery you want to change, and click the Multiple Galleries button at the very top. Then one by one add galleries to the list, and finally, change the category and sub-cat for all of them at once.

It's a little slow adding many galleries, but much quicker than changing the settings on each gallery individually.

OP, just returning to this thread. I really appreciate the add-on suggestions. Unfortunately for me, it appears that I can't use either of the add-ons. SmugBrowser won't load on my Firefox 3.6, and Star*Explorer isn't a Mac app.

Are there any Mac add-ons? Or is SM any closer to having a more robust gallery-management process?

Still interested, but wanted to report that I downgraded my Firefox to 3.03 and installed SmugBrowser. Exactly what I need - no drag and drop, but a lot easier. Based on comments in another thread, I may try to re-upgrade Firefox and see if it still works. Thanks to all for the tips!
