Multi-word Keywords Not Found in Search

I've got several photos tagged with multi-word keywords (e.g. "Golden Gate Bridge"), and when I search my site using the SM search box from my home page, it says "No keywords were found". The photos are found, it's the keyword(s) it can't find.
When I search for a single keyword (e.g. landscapes) it locates the keyword, but not for any of the multi-word keywords I may have associated to my images and may search on.
It's my understanding that you must surround keyword strings in quotes when searching, but with or without quotes it is not returning ANY of my multi-word keywords in the keywords section on the search results page.
What am I doing wrong here? It finds the relevant photos, so this isn't a big deal, but I am just trying to understand how this all works.
