Sunpak 444d help

I just picked up a couple of these flashes from a thrift store for $1 each, but they don't have the modules on the bottom that allow connection to a shoe mount. I put batteries in them just to make sure they would power up, and both of them fired just fine when I hit the test button, so I'm assuming they'll work once I have the proper connections for them. I only intend to use them off camera with ebay wireless triggers (the ones recommended by Art Scott). What I'm trying to find out is if anyone has any experience with these units, and if it matters which module I get (the ones for some camera models are significantly cheaper than others). Also, I was wondering if there is any way to trigger them without the modules at all...thanks in advance:D
