Choices 24-105 or 24-70

OK, I have saved my shekels and can now buy another lens. What are the pros and cons of these two (both Canon):
24-105 f/4 OR 24-70 f/2.8?

Price wise there's about $100 between them so that's irrelevant.

I'm looking for a good portrait lens primarily that will work for individuals and smallish groups.

Thoughts please?

What camera(s) will you use the lens on?

Do you desire more control over DOF?

Do you desire to shoot in ambient lighting in low light conditions?

    Is weight an issue?

Do you need the extended range of the 24-105mm?

Do you wish to post-process for barrel distortion at the wide end?

    Canon 1D IV

    Yep - f/2.8 or better

I'll be shooting in a lot of low light conditions.

    Is weight an issue?

Not after lugging the 70-200 f/2.8 :) Sadly, my left bicep is 2x my right.

    See above. Have 70-200mm f/2.8

Not if I can help it.

Thanks for getting me to clarify - for you and for me.

It does sound like the EF 24-70mm, f2.8L USM is the better choice for your situation and needs.

    Edit for a "Doh" moment.

from your info, it sounds like the 24-70mm would fill your needs. the range will not overlap your 70-200mm and you get the f/2.8 for better DoF and low light. My 24-70 lives on my 7D...I love it.
Canon 7D and some stuff that sticks on the end of it.
