Introducing Android Portfolio Lite

pearsonartphotopearsonartphoto Registered Users Posts: 34 Big grins
My first beta of my upcoming Android program has been released. Right now it only lets you browse around the images I've released, but that'll shortly be fixed, hopefully in less than a week. I wanted to get something to show off, so I released version 0.6.

The program is called Portfolio. It'll have 2 versions eventually, a lite (free) version and a professional version. The lite version will only access what can be seen publicly, the pro version will allow for logging into an account and doing lots of cool things, which haven't all been determined yet.

Anyways, hope you enjoy! Let me know if you have any overall comments, and I'll see what I can do to get them in before the full release.

Is it on the market? Does it run on 1.5? I'm not seeing it right away in the market, but portfolio is a fairly common term, so maybe I'm just not scrolling through enough stuff...

It is on the market, unfortunately it requires 2.0... I might make a 1.5 version, but, well, my phone is 2.1, so it's a bit harder to get myself to do it...

Well, my phone (Motorola Backflip) and most others are supposed to be upgrading to 2.1 sometime this year, so not a big worry pretty soon... It's just been frustrating that so many of the more interesting apps are 1.6 or 2.0+.

Sorry 'bout that. The one thing I wanted was the ability to pinch zoom, that's new to 2.0, so... I could probably find another way to deal with that issue, but, well... Right now it only loads my pictures, I'd really like it to load an arbitrary users, not to mention run a bit smoother...

Just released version 0.7.0, it's actually pretty close to a full beta, still lots of bugs and such, but it's a big step forward from 0.6.2 that I had previously released. So please update, and give it another try if you uninstalled it quickly. I plan on smoothing it over quite a bit.

    Some new features include:
    1) The ability to change usernames (Yeah!)
    2) Some of the transitions have progress dialogs to show what's being done.
    3) I've fixed the crash that occurred when internet access wasn't available (I'm still working on improving this alot more, so...)
    4) I've created a simple about, a sign up for smugmug, and a few other things.

There's still alot to do before I'll be at the RC build, but, well, it's actually usable by someone other than myself right now, so... Let me know what you think!

Just released version 0.8.1, it's a considerable improvement, including speed enhancements, reduced crashes, and more notification of what's going on. I also increased the image sizes, so that it's alot easier to see what's going on. Check it out if you can, it's actually decent now. Still has more bugs then I'd like, but... That'll have to wait until the 1.0 release.

Okay, I'm up to 0.8.3, it's getting alot more stable, and I'm seeing people actually keep it on their phones. It's at over 50 downloads, so far, and is keep coming.

Improvements include reduced crashing, improved dialogs, more intuitive interface, using larger images to browse, which makes them take up the full screen, and a few things under the hood to improve efficiency. If you tried it earlier and removed it, I recommend trying it again.

Nope, scroll down a bit... Problem with the word Portfolio is it often is talked about in terms of Stock portfolio... It's called "Portfolio Lite Beta", and has a photo of my sister as the icon.

Okay, just released version 0.9.0, it's a huge improvement over previous versions. Seriously, it is. Stability is improved considerably, image thumbnails now appear in the gallery browsing screen, there is at least an initial capacity to getting information on images and comments to those images, to email a link to a client, as well as a look at things to come in the pro version. This is almost my release candidate build, I believe that will be version 0.9.1, soon to come. That will basically continue the progress of this build to other areas, and hopefully improve the stability a bit more. The version 1.0.0 will be a version that I've done some fair testing to prevent crashes, it should be a great version. Then I can finally start work on the pro version.

Also, if you like this program, please review it. I could use a few more reviews. Thanks guys, and I hope you enjoy.

    Sounds cool :)

Pity I don't have an android phone to test it on.

How are you currently retrieving comments for images ? smugmug.images.comments.get ? Not sure if it's of interest or not, but you can retrieve comments for images in the smugmug.images.get by adding &Extras=Comments.

tried using it on a droid x with the froyo leaked ROM installed. when i tried to change username it gave a fast error message and then reloaded the default galleries. i tried to enter a username again and it FC'd.

cant wait until it works on froyo!

    Athos,

It's not actually a Froyo problem, it's a configuration problem... Smugmug is amazingly customizable, but that unfortunately leaves alot of combinations that I have no doubt not studied... What I found was that one of your albums was empty, and this caused the crash. Thanks for finding the bug, I'll release a new version soon to fix it.

    devbobo,
Yep, that's how I'm doing it. I don't want to get the comments all of the time, otherwise I'd do it the method you mentioned.

Just submitted another update, it should make things run a bit smoother, adds a few new features, and shows what some upcoming features will be. I was hoping to do gallery stats to a better level prior to releasing, but, well, I've had a busy work at my day job...

It looks good, really good. The best I've seen for smugmug thus far however it's very slow and clunky on my HTC desire :(

would this be network speed related?

    campo,

Thanks for the compliments. Unfortunately it's slower than I'd like, I'm trying to come up with a few things to speed it up, but unfortunately it's a challenge... I was actually thinking of a few things on the way home from my day job, hopefully I'll have a chance to give them a shot in the next few days... It is at least partially network related, but I'm still going to try and improve it some.

I notice another app call Just Pictures has a (visible) size configurable cache...definitely an option to increase performance. I'm going to give the program a whirl when i'm on a good wifi connection :)

whilst i'm yet to purchase an android app (only had my phone for a couple of weeks), i reckon this could be my first :)

    keep up the great work!

I just figured out how to do a memory cache that's almost transparent to even the programmer, and I've tested it out. So far it looks really promising, but I've got a good network connection in my home, so... I'm going to try it out for a few days before I release it to the market place again.

If I've got people willing to pay for the paid version, I'd better get to work on it... Right now I'd be happy with a few more people commenting on it... It'd be nice to have at least 4 stars...

I recently released a new version, sorry for the delays, I'm been busy with outside commitments that will be done shortly. I should be updating a bit more frequently from now on. My goal is to have the lite version done solidly by the end of the year, and to work on the pro version around Christmas.

Okay folks, I've got 2 weeks off of my day job, which means I'm going to get a professional version of this out in that period of time. I need to know what kinds of things you'd like to see out of this program soon. I'm playing around with it now, seeing what I can remember of my to-do list, but I can promise you, I'm going to have alot more time to work on this, especially in the short term future!

Okay, I've now got a version out that is feature complete (For the lite version), doesn't crash easily, and seems to have a workable UI! Yeah! I'm probably going to start working on the pro version, but I'd like to get any feedback on this version, if possible. I'm planning on the 1.0 release in the next week or two, after I make sure there aren't any bugs.
