Well, that got you looking didn't it?
What you are going to see here is indeed the arse end of an orb spider, but particularly at the spinneret, which is the bit of the anatomy from which these incredibly articulate webs are deposited from. You can clearly see the web irradiating from the spinneret and the start of the web pattern beneath her.
What further intrigued me was the startling ornate pattern BENEATH the spider, and indeed it even looks as if it has two eyes and a mouth area in the midriff of it's under-body.
This is the female that I photographed the other night doing a bat impression, but maybe a more interesting - in so much as an unusual - point of view.
