Flash trigger + 430exii

I have a Canon 5D and a 430exii flash. In order to set up a wireless flash system, I know I need either a Radio Popper or a Pocket Wizard set-up. BUT, (1) what exactly do I need to make the equipment talk to each other? and (2) which is better, RP or PW? Thanks for help!

You could also use an optical wireless transmitter on the Canon 5D camera. This works fairly well for indoor work but it is less reliable outdoors where you have no walls/ceiling to bounce the optical information.

A Canon ST-E2 wireless transmitter would work as would a Sigma EF 530 DG Super flash on the camera. (I can use a Sigma 530 Super flash to trigger my Canon 580EX, for instance.)

I am not familiar with the radio transmitter/receiver sets which allow E-TTL so I hope others join the discussion.

Anyone know if I need a ST-E2 AND the Radio Poppers or Pocket Wizards to get a wireless flash set up (flash set up on stand off camera)? Is the answer different if we're talking about a 580 v. a 430 flash?
