UMass Men's Soccer: first UMass athletics post of the season
First UMass athletics event of the year.
Dont know how much I will shoot this year. The university doesnt like paying me to shoot (cause I already work at the university) so they would rather pay someone else outside twice as much.
I dont know if I would of taken the contract though, it says UMass retains the rights to the photos....for life. I would be ok with a limited rights contract (or shared for 4 years and then I retain the rights). Also the SID approached me and told me I can no longer sell my photos. So no income coming from UMass athletics.
I think what really makes me feel crappy is two things a) I get to look at the media guides and see how amazing they look with all my photos in them and now I cant shoot for them in that capacity.
b) the prices I charged for 8 x 10 was the pretty standard 15. UMass athletics is now charging 20 plus a 5 dollar shipping. What bothers me about this is that most of the people that bought photos from me are player parents. They just want nice photos of their kids. I would take the money I would make from photos to pay to by better equipment, where as umass is going to take the money to exploit further than they already are.
I guess i just got my first lesson in the harsh world of photograhpy.
Then again I guess some of these issues could be a whole seperate thread for debate.
Here I thought I was doing good.

On the brighter side, I really like the rainbow shot.

I think one of the hardest things for me to take in this whole deal is looking at this years media guides. They look incredible and are about 85% my photos. So to see something look that good, to know that they liked my photos and to not be able to shoot initially because of the university and not wanting to pay me for the 2nd job on campus. And for them to completly deny my chance to make any sales via print.
But like I said alot of it is an argument for another thread. Digital photograhpy makes the barriers of entry into the business alot easier. Honestly I dont know if I would of got as into it if it wasnt for digital. I always had interest in photograhpy (had done videograhpy before). At the same times, there are tons of people willing to shoot on the sidelines for nothing. I was asking very little, but talking to some local pros, they just wanted to make sure I wasnt doing if for free ( I couldnt justify asking for more, since I was learning on their dime...i thought it was a good deal).
I may be getting the opportunity to have some GIANT mural sized photos hanging in the mullins center.
Its really disapointing.
