High ISO

My daughter and grandson, handheld shot under dim lighting in a log cabin. Ambient lighting only. The catchlights in his eyes are from a floor lamp over my shoulder (CFL bulb - blrgh.) If you are seriously considering a D700, I heartily endorse the purchase.

D700, 24-70 f2.8, ISO 6400.

    Oh, no. Run through Lightroom 3 for color balance, cropping, etc. I shoot RAW, so there ain't no such thing as SOOC for ANYTHING you see from me:D.

    The lighting way up in the ceiling was tungsten, and the floor lamp was CFL. Gross combination. If you look in the left side of the photo, you'll still see a bit of green in the boy's hair. One of these days, I may work on that.

    Never said that. Just like ALL RAW shots need capture and output sharpening, a little luminance smoothing will benefit most shots, but at the size posted here, I can't see the result.

    Here's the same image pre-luminance smoothing. Hey, it's good to be skeptical. For what these camera's cost, they should damn well do barely believable things. But seriously, can you see any difference. ISO 6400 . . . are you kidding me?

    You HAVE made me wonder though. Just how good is LR3's NR tool? Think I'll shoot some ISO 25K and see what I can come up with. Can't believe I've had the D700 for three months now and haven't done that yet. Oh, yeah, now I remember. LR1's NR sucked.
