Hi,
I have contacted by a company wanting to use one of my photos for thier products.
How much should I ask for??
Don't want to be too greedy and yet not taken for a ride!

This sounds like a good thing.
(How much should I ask for??)
How high is up?
Don't want to be too greedy and yet not taken for a ride!
My question to you is, how can you be taken for a ride? Your an amateur (my assumption) your photo is just sitting there generating $0.00. Out of the blue someone spots it and sees a fit with a commercial use. If you sold it for a dollar would you be harmed in any way? It looks like you have a photo with one potential buyer.
If you are worried about not getting the most, and are looking to extract the maximum for this one photo from your only buyer, good luck.
I think the real issue here is what is common and ordinary charge to license a photo for the use intended.
First, what do they want to use the photo for? Is this a large company, or small mom and pop operation? Do they have any experience with licensing photos, and art work or is this something new for them? Is you photo in the right format with enough resolution for the use?
If it were me I would just be honest and sit down with them and talk.

- What media? (online, magazine, pamphlet, billboard, etc)
- What quantity? (are they printing 6 million or 600?)
- What distribution? (is this local, regional, statewide, national?)
- What duration? (are they asking for perpertual use, multiple printings over 10 years, one time use?)
- What impact? (is your image the focus of the thing, or just a small part of it)
- What size? (is this a 1/4 page, 1/2 page, full page, cover shot?)
All of these things together will help you set a price. There are some online resources that will help out, I'll try to dig up the links.

Search dgrin, I know Shay Stephens has posted quite a bit about this, with information about books and/or links.
