The professional water skiing circuit recently came through town (Milwaukee) so I just had to take a crack at shooting this sport for the first time. It was tricky, but I had a blast. I can't wait for another chance to shoot these guys. Here's some of what I captured. (My error, it was called the Malibu Open).

1. They competed in a lagoon just outside of downtown Milwaukee.

2. These are all probably pretty basic shots for this sport, but it is a lot of fun the first time you shoot them.

3. As it got dark, they turned on some portable lights which really made a neat scene.

4. The competition lasted until almost 11pm, so that gave me a chance to do some work with a flash too. I just love this one!

That last one is nice. Is the light all flash or a combination of the stadium lighting and your flash? #3 looks soft--maybe it's just the compression?

The last one is 99% camera flash. #3 is just missed focus, you can see that his ski logo is spot on. The story behind #3 is that the skier is world champion Will Asher and this is his latest world record breaking run. I forget exactly, but it's something like 6 buoys at 49 off (whatever that means). I was the only person to get a shot of that run so I'm surprised nobody inquired about using it, although one site did try to steal a bunch and hide the watermarks. I found out and asked them to pay a measly fee - which they declined - so they had to pull them! deal.gif

#4 is fantastic! What type flash throws light that far? That's really cool!

Yeah, that one did turn out pretty cool, eh? mwink.gif That was the Canon 580ex-II, on camera. It's pretty powerful at full throttle. I checked the original and it was taken at 8:43pm, so it was pretty dark at the time and I'd say the skier was about 150 to 175 ft away

Thanks! I shoot Nikon, so my assumption is my SB900 might have that reach as well. Good stuff to know. Thanks again.
