Aperture 3 is freezing up!!!

I have a Imac with 10.5.8
2.66 GHZ processor
4 GB of SDRAM
I bought it preloaded with Aperture 2. I was having problems with it freezing up about 10% of the time and was told that the "fix" would be to upgrade to 3.0. I still am having problems! I often have to force quit Aperture and restart. Any ideas?
Would an upgrade to 10.6 perhaps solve my problem?
BTW, I do not have any problems with other programs.
