Thoughts on my lens collection?

Well, I think I am done buying lenses for awhile. After owning my D300S for a few months... I have already purchased.... in this order....

Nikon 18-200 VRII
Nikon 35mm 1.8
Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR
Nikon 70-300
Nikon 17-55 2.8 (being returned)
Tamron 17-50 2.8 VC -yet to arrive
Tokina 12-24 -*edit* deal fell through
Tokina 11-16 2.8 coming soon!

I also bought a D70 for a back up... since it was pretty cheap.

What do you guys think? I think this pretty much covers the range for me. I am missing macro capability though. Are there any other lenses that you recommend? I shoot EVERYTHING and specialize in none. Motorsports, models, and landscapes are my favorite though.

I am considering one more lens. The Nikon 80-400... but what do you think of buying a teleconvertor for the 70-200 instead? Any thoughts on that and my collection would be appreciated.

You have no large aperture prime lenses which can be very valuable for landscapes and portraiture/model photography. You have no dedicated and true macro lens(es).

Yeah, I knew I didn't have any macro capabilty and since I posted this.... I have been looking hard at another wide angle. The 2.8 Tokina 11-16. I think I have been making good choices as far as 3rd party lenses go so far. I hate to return the Nikkor 17-55 as it's such a beautiful tank but the Tammy 17-50 is by far a better value.... and has comparable IQ.... plus VC. It's $1000 less!!!

Isn't the 35 1.8 a large aperture prime? Not very wide I know but what would you recommend, Ziggy? For me and MY money that is! haha

You seem to have a lot of overlap.

My bad. I just didn't see it.

I don't have any singular recommendations. You should approach lens purchases from the perspective of satisfying a need.

Pretty much any focal length can be used for landscape photography, so if you are wanting to isolate a subject in a scene you choose the focal length which matches your desired FOV. The large aperture allows better control over DOF.

What about finding yourself a good ol'Nikkor 20mm 2.8 or 3.5 and take it on a WA journey? The old lenses will meter on anything D200 above.

RE: macro... it all depends on if/how often you shoot it. If you have a good all-around lens that gets within a few inches, 3:1+ shouldn't be overlooked for casual close up shots. I have a Nikkor 60/2.8 and really do love it for general. If you want serious macro, Nikkor has a MF 105/4 that can play on the WOW factor. I think this also comes AF and maybe even AFS(?)... if you have the spare cash.

But, on a budget, I've found the MF copy suits me quite well.

Nice shots. I have thought about that 105 before. It's a little pricey but I may pop on one if I can find one second hand. That may prove hard to find though. I definitely want AF.... with override. I think if I had a nice lens like your 105..... I'd shoot with it alot.... and my new found interest in macro. haha

I think I would be happier with a WA zoom. It will help with composing and I'd get more keepers/good shots I think.

Yes and no. I have some overlap but different apertures. I started with the 18-200... like a lot of people do... and that's the reason for most of the overlap. I upgraded lenses but I could never give up the versatility of the 18-200.

That's my problem. I don't really have a specific need so to speak. I just want all the good stuff!! :D haha I do want to be covered for most everything... and I want large apertures for sure but man is it expensive!

The deal on the Tokina 12-24 just fell through so I'm definitely in the market for a wide angle... and not quite finished buying lenses. Does it ever end? I am seriously thinking about the Tok 11-16.

Just wanted to add that I have decided. I am getting the Tokina 11-16 in place of the 12-24 deal that fell through. I'm glad. It's an awesome lens and I'm sure lots of people here own it and are happy with it. Let me know if you have it and how you like it! I'm excited for glass yet again. Ugh.... it IS an addiction. Why!!!!! eek7.gif

I have the Canon version of the Tokina and have been very happy with the quality. The only thing I've been thinking about is how little I have ended up using it. I originally (mistakenly) thought I would use it for landscape type shots, but my 24-70 2.8 is much better for that. The 11-16 has become more of a creative closeup shot lens for me...now for me to actually use it more. mwink.gif
Canon 7D and some stuff that sticks on the end of it.

I'm surprised to hear that you like the 24-70 instead of the 11-16..... since the Tokina goes much wider and is suppose to have amazing sharpness and color as well. I want mine for landscapes and interior shots/real estate photography. I have heard people say the same thing though... that they don't use it as much as they thought they would. I may end up the same way but I'm still super anxious to get one and have it in my bag. Want to sell yours? mwink.gif haha I know that ya don't!

Destiny just happened. :D I called around and one of my local camera shops had the Tokina 11-16 in stock. They wouldn't budge from the $619 asking price. Adorama has it for like $575 right now. So, I call my other local shop and asked for that lens. The guy said "Woah... we never see that lens come in and we don't carry them new BUT someone just brought in a MINT one yesterday". $475.

.... and just to add to my fun. As I was just writing this post... the mail man knocked on my door literally just 2 minutes ago. Now, I have an unopened box sitting next to me that contains my new Tamron 17-50 2.8 VC!!! Great day for me and glass!!!wings.gif

*Update* Holy crap that Tamron is a sharp lens! Love it! Now I'm off to pick up the Tokina. :)

*Update2* Loving the super wide Tokina!!! Everyone should own one of these bad boys.

I am VERY satisfied with my venture into 3rd party lenses and I'm pretty happy right now.

If anyone has any recommendations or reviews they want to share... please do. Thanks!

Here's my babies.... minus the 70-200 which is in for AF repair. I love all of them. :D Would you guys sweat not having 2.8 from 50-70 minus the crop factor?

Probably not. Only a few steps back and forth I think.

Yeah, I think I can live with it... just for now. :D

I just added ANOTHER 2.8 lens to my collection though! Macro capability as well!!! A Tamron 90mm 2.8 macro from a member here. So excited to get some macro images!! Anyone have this lens or experience with it? I have heard good things and have seen amazing images from it!!!

I would sweat having to carry all those goodies at once :D

Man, I have a hard enough time just picking out a lens for my D90 from my current collection of three primes and two zooms. I dunno what I'd do in your case.
