The supertelephotos get an update:

+ Canon 300mm f/2.8 L IS II
+ Canon 400mm f/2.8 L IS II
+ Canon 500mm f/4.0 L IS II (in development)
+ Canon 600mm f/4.0 L IS II (in development)

As well as the TC's:

+ Canon 1.4x TC III
+ Canon 2.0x TC III

And two new lenses have been anounced:

+ Canon 8-15mm f/4.0 L Fisheye Zoom
+ Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 L IS

Links

And I was getting my hopes up for a new 24-70 f/2.8 with IS :rolleyes :D

I am really disappointed in this announcement. The 60D is very confusing to this 40D owner. With a smaller body and articulated LCD, this model now says pure consumer to me. Makes me glad I bought the 40D instead. The 70-300 is interesting, as the dilemma of 100mm focal length was always an issue with the 70-300 IS. But it was constant f4 that made the 70-200 L my choice. This new 70-300L benefits are not as clear. It better be amazingly sharp.

And I am with manfred, where is the 28-70 IS?

I merged these 2 threads. Carry on.

... and thanks folks for linking to the manufacturer's site. We don't need to send any more traffic to DPReview when they are just copying the Canon announcements.

The 70-300 "L" certainly surprised me. I have the impression that Canon could not, or simply would not revamp the 100-400 so they came out with this instead. The Series III 2.0 teleconverter has my attention, as I've been told by more than one person to use a 2X on my 70-200/2.8 rather than buy a 100-400. And if the series III of this converter is as good as claimed that could be a great way for me to go.

But have you seen the price on the new 300/2.8 prime? Holy smokes! I should have kept mine.... I paid a little over $4,000 when I bought mine in 2006. Kick... self... in... butt... :D

Yes that confused me too. Maybe Canon plans to get rid of the 100-400
and this lens is it's replacement (along with a new 200-400mm f/4.0 L IS of course) :D

:cry Ditto - that is a lens I could really use for what I do. And there had been hints of a revised 50mm 1.4, which also sounded most interesting.

Oh well - maybe next quarter?

I will say that I'm glad I didn't wait and instead jumped to the 7d when I spotted a great deal - the 60d wouldn't really have been for me.

    Not me.:nah

The Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM lens is expected to be available toward the end of October for an approximate retail price of $1,500.

Pretty exciting! It's interesting that they are replacing their entire super-tele lineup. We wonder what the plans are for the 800mm.

None, the 800 is their latest super tele before this update and already has the new design. You can tell by the looks alone.

I don't understand this new Mode 3 image stabilization mode mentioned for the 300 and 400 primes.

In previous Canon IS implementations when you "half-depress" the shutter button the IS is activated. In Mode 3 IS I believe that you have to fully depress the shutter button before the IS engages.

The advantage of mode 3 IS would be power savings. The disadvantage would be no stabilization during half-depress AF and less responsiveness at full depress.

Doesn't IS lock the focus point on the image once it kicks in? Just a guess but with mode 3 it sounds like you can move the focus point around on the image to where you want it on it without having to worry about IS kicking in, then fully depressing the button locks the image and take the picture.

I wouldn't get the current 2x teleconverter, it's not very good. I used to have one and used it on the 70-200 f2.8IS and the 300mm f4 IS. even stopped down it was too soft, it didn't resolve any more detail then cropping and blowing up the image. I sold it and got the 1.4x which is much better.

After reading that article, I would jump on the 70-300 if I didn't already have the 70-200 f/4 IS. Canon marketing works on me since I called it too expensive earlier in the thread ;)

That was a good article, Eric. I'm really curious how the L-series 70-300 compares to the 100-400 (which always had mediocre reviews, especially for auto focus speed and tracking), or compared to my 70-200/2.8 with the 1.4TC.

Canon has posted a video demonstrating the zoom effect on the new Fisheye: Right here
I wonder who's gonna use this lens from 14 to 9mm .. nobody with a fullframe body I guess.

Bill (and anyone) - this is an interesting thought. I just shot for a few days, from am moving boat, mammals and birds in Alaska - using a 400 f/5.6 and 100-400L - neither of which is consistently good enough or fast enough for the job.

I'm going to need similar low-ish light and zoom flexibility when I go shooting in Africa.

I'm now wondering, like you, if the awesome 70-200 f/2.8 L IS II, paired with the new 2x TC, would be a better, sharper, more easily AF-ing setup? It'll still be f/5.6, but f/5.6 on a lens that is already crazy crazy sharp, even at f/2.8.

I guess I can buy the TC in December and give it a try. Thoughts?

headscratch.gif Please explain. I mean of you want to get rid of the vignetting
you'll have to crop out alot and end up with the same framing as
if you shot at 15mm or some sort of square format image.

    No but 100% crops with the old 2x TC 70-200 f/2.8 L IS II @ 400mm f/5.6 vs 400mm f/5.6 L
You know the AF will be much faster on the prime.

Andy, I'm both intrigued and skeptical. The current 2X converter has never had a good reputation. The consensus there was better to use the 1.4 instead and then crop later to get the "extra reach" that you missed. Supposedly you got a sharper image by throwing away pixels than having the amplified lens reach. This extender is supposed to be better so who knows? But I'm really curious to find out. I was really hoping for a re-design of the 100-400, or maybe a 200-400/4 instead. The more I think of the 70-300 "L" the more I scratch my head.

The other alternative is to use a Nikon D3 and the awesome 200-400 f/4 VR lens.
