Theft Protection

I have read a number of posts from folks reporting the theft of images. So I guess my question is how secure is the right click protection. I have always used the right click feature as my first line of defense against theft. Am I wrong. I know there are geeks out there that can defeat almost any security system however I assume it is a little difficult to copy and print when the right click feature is used. Am I wrong.

Right click protection is merely a bump in the road. You should not view it as protection at all. If an image is viewed in a browser, the image is available on the local computer and can be easily stolen.

You've already limited your exposure by limiting the largest image shown on your site.

    See http://www.smugmug.com/help/image-protection.

There is a post in the thread ORIGINALS = a gateway to free photos, & right click protection is NOT PROTECTION that links to a twitter post telling how to steal an image using Firefox.

Along these lines, can the digital watermark be added via smugmug for display purposes on galleries previously uploaded?

Does that watermark display on an image in a remote forum if using the link from smugmug?

Yes, you can. Go into the gallery, select Tools, Many Photos, More, Watermarking.
I didn't have any luck watermarking my whole site after the fact, however.

    Thanks for the reply....

Andy, is that true the watermark will only be from the point installed forward and not get the entire gallery after the fact?

If you add a watermark to a gallery after you have uploaded photos, you can apply that watermark to the photos already in the gallery.

In the gallery, go to Tools... More... Watermarking. Select the watermark you want to use and the photos you want to apply the watermark to. Then click "watermark".

Image theft also happens when you have a larger display size. Setting the maximum size to Medium helps as well. thumb.gif

It's probably something simple, but in my galleries the smallest display size is xlarge. How do I get large or medium?

You need a pro-level account to make the smallest display size smaller than xlarge.

From the security & privacy section of the help page at http://www.smugmug.com/help/picture-storage:
If you'd rather your visitors didn't have access to view your high-resolution original images, select a smaller size as your Largest size. Power and standard users can block original, X3L, and X2L by choosing to display XLarge as their largest size. Pro users can block even the large size by choosing to display medium as their largest size.

Hi, to continue with the topic:

I have uploaded my images to unlisted galleries. I have then created new galleries and made them listed. To fill this listed galleries I have Collected images from the unlisted galleries.

I did not apply a watermark to the unlisted galleries, I kepted the maximum size to original and I didnt block the right click download option.

On the listed galleries settings I applied watermarking, I reduced the size available to visitors and I didn't block the right click download.

Regarding the watermark: Since it didn't work, I applied watermarking from the tools while at the listed gallery. The result was that the watermark is shown in all galleries, listed and unlisted.

On the matter of the image size shown, I had to go to the original unlisted gallery, and change there the size, in order to limit the size available at the listed gallery.

    QUESTION:

Can we have our original files, on unlisted galleries and create listed galleries with images collected from the unlisted galleries but apply limitations of size, watermarking and right click download only to the listed galleries of our choice?

I hope this is possible... I would like to have a way to keep my portfolio, watermarked and size limited open to the public, but I will also like (and need) to be able to create password protected galleries to show my images without watermarks or size limits to trusted visitors (Clients, collegues, family and friends)

    My website is: jorgesalasphoto.smugmug.com

Right now, I have a mess with the watermarks. Please have a look if possible.

    Thanks,

    Jorge

Thanks Andy. I hope this is something that could be changed in the future... any plans or talks on this feature already? I think it will provide a versatility that I find much needed for my business.

    Hi

Since it is possible to have your settings such that other SmugMug account holders can collect your photos, it is CRITICAL to the feature that the collected photos obey the settings and pricing of your original gallery. You wouldn't want someone else changing your settings, would you?

You can always make copies and move the photos if you need different settings for the same photos in different galleries.

That is an unfortunate tradeoff. Many of us (like me) have disabled collecting by others (I have found no need for it), but we're still penalized by the loss of flexibility in making unique settings for a collected photo. There are many, many use cases for unique settings. The most common use case I've seen is allowing access to originals on a subset of photos in a password protected gallery for one particular person. Right now, we are forced to upload duplicates. I hope you consider solving this at some point.

Life is full of them :D We needed to get this feature out (at the time, it was the #1 requested feature).

I'm so glad we have it, and the response from all types of customers has been overwhelmingly positive.

I'm just hoping you're considering solving the use case that I described and, as you know, is frequently asked about in the forums here. Would save you some storage and upload processing.
