The only Ferrari...

Thats right: the only Ferrari I saw in Italy! I was even more saddened from not seeing any Lamborhgini's (Spelling? IVE FORGOTTEN HOW TO SPELL MY FAVORITE ITALIAN MARQUE! NO!!!)! I personally would buy a Lambo over a Ferrari, on the basis of how the two families interacted in the past, and how much of snobs the Ferraris were... And Im not even touching F1 '63-65...

The sun was intense! Im sure not even my own eyes, through sunglasses, did this beauty justice (they are beautiful regardless of the family!), so I dont even know how accurate this shot it, with just a little touching up via Jasc PSP... Please tell me your thoughts! I want to get shooting in extremely high-light situations down with this camera!
TIA

See how the shot still looks chitzy now? After resizing it to 800x600 pixels, its lost some of its sharpness and seems to be getting "the squares" (whatever you call it when you over zoom...) much earlier! What do I do?!

Hmm, I'm not sure what the best way is to get rid of the compression artifacts. Maybe someone more technically inclined can help.

The cars are beautiful. WRT shooting in midday sun, the standard advice is to avoid it, because the bright sun is so harsh. Makes for too dark shadows and too bright highlights, and isn't very flattering. The usual advice is to shoot in the "golden hours" when the sun is low on the horizon, and the light is filtered through our filthy atmosphere - it gives the light a more golden glow, softens it, makes it more pleasing. As with any rule, this one can be broken to good effect people who are really skilled.
    Sid.

Oooo, you hit my specialty. Ferraris are my first automotive love. Here are a few recent galleries.

There were many Ferraris in and around Boston a few weeks ago. May 23 was "Tutto Italiano" at the Museum of Transportation in Brookline, MA. And the night before was a gathering of Ferrari owners at a posh Boston restaurant.

Oh, and if you're really into Ferraris and have an hour to kill, browse through the Cars section on my site: http://douging.smugmug.com/Cars.

I've been to a few Ferrari dealer/service shops in the Boston (and 2 in Ft Lauderdale, FL) area for events or just to take pictures.

I think a circular polarizing filter would be exactly what you need for shooting mid-day. I still need to get one for myself.

Whoa! Doug, I must say, youre a Ferrari-phile! The shots of the track-cars are my favorites, though! The last one, as the bottom; that one gave me goose-bumps! That thing just looks like speed, congealed and solidified after pausing just long enough to look good! 'Wonder what those naca ducts on the hood are for...? High-speed AC? :D

Yep, Ill be a'browsing your shots soon there! Youre the kind of photographer I was kinda hoping to run into on this board! I love car shots! But Im afraid I find the most interesting photos to be those of the tuner-car industry; they have the edge when it comes to creativity on a budget way south of Ferrari's!
The other thing is, I love the Ferrari cars (hell, the Enzo is literally the best sports car in the world, inarguably, and by the numbers!), but I harbor a sort of removed contempt for the marque ever since reading about Phil Hill and his relationship with Ferrari during the F1 seasons of 1961-'63. That and Ferrari's treatment of a well known and well-heeled tractor-builder and Ferrari-enthusiast that would one day be Ferrari's biggest rival, Mr. Lamborghini! Therefore, the car I would first purchase with my own money would be a Lambo... Then, maybe Id pick up an Enzo, once Im rich and famous from my mad photographic skillz, dog! :D

Thanks for sharing, Doug! Those are spec-freaking-tacular!

Actually, there are two Doug's posting here (dugmar and douging).

My shots above are the race shots. Doug Ingram's are of the street cars. The nacaducts are probably cool air ducts for the driver.

We both work together at Turner Motorsport in Mass. We both have smugmug accounts. You will find a lot of cars on both of our pages. Here are some more:

*Sheepishness* Sorry Doug M.! I didnt notice that until you pointed it out!
Well, thanks to both of you Dougs for sharing!
I really loved the track cars! Im more of a race-fantatic than I hope to ever realize, but I dont neglect the street cars, where most of us spend our time anyway!
In August, Im going to the Monterey Historical Car Race (I think it was "Race"; cant remember...), where this year's "featured marque" is Ferrari! Ill definitely get lots of photos, and Ill hopefully have a smugmug account by then, so if you dont mind, Id like to share them here too! Supposedly all the classic Ferraris from different parts of the world are gonna meet up and race around of the most gorgeous areas of California--and my favorite area, for that matter (sorry seamaiden; O.C. doesnt hold a candle to the Monterey Peninsula!)--Monetery and Carmel (I believe...) and/or the surrounding areas! Its gonna be one of the sweetest motorsports events Ill ever attend, thats for sure! Doug(s), PM me if you want more info!

Although I was ashamed to admit it, the only other Ferrari I saw on my first trip to Europe was in the middle of Heathrow, London! Also, I cant believe myself, but the car was on raffle (actually, a silver version of the same thing at a different location), with the tickets going for about 70 *pounds*; the thing is, there were only 3,000 tickets, and there was still about 1/4 of the tickets left!!! $7000 for a 100 in 3000 chance to win a car worth $275000?!?!
    *Kicks self*
Well, here ya go; a blue Challange Stradale that could have been mine (it was even a U.S. Spec. car!!! AAARRGGHH!!!):

Doug M., you guys are some serious BMW tuners! I accidently backed all the way out of your car gallery and saw your "products gallery", and I had to peek! MAN, those are some beefy, trick looking cam gears! And I kinda figured you guys would make your own in-house ECU upgrade/chip, but were those LSDs or what in the third picture? Thats what they looked like, so thats what I took them for, but now my memory is jilting me...

Doug, you have the job I dream of! Blast you! :bash :twitch bowdown.gif:D Tuning, shooting, watching, and driving Bimmers! What could be better than that?! Oh yeah; the same, except with Ferrari's or Bugatti's! :D
I was wondering, though; you guys do work mostly for the track cars, or do you have a more street-oriented division that pays the rent? Thats the one thing Ive wondered about the big-tuner guys; how much of the pro's business do you get when everybody is doing stuff in-house these days?
    Keep rocking Dougs!

We have always done racecar building and prep but just recently we have welcomed service and repair for normal, every day street cars. There's still quite a bit of eye-popping machinery around here too. I've started to catalog them on my smugmug site, http://douging.smugmug.com/gallery/112347.

The track car stuff occpies about half of the shop space that we have. We run five cars in two professional series, Speed Touring Car and Grand Am Cup. If you get the Speed Channel you can catch both of our teams in action this Sunday at 12pm and 2pm.

I've never been to the Pebble Beach/Monterey weekend but I have heard that on a normal weekend it's shoulder-to-shoulder. On a Ferrari weekend I can only imagine that it will be 2-3 deep around the cars. That said, I'm still jealous that you're going. Get there early and take as many as you can!
