These were taken using available light, and 300mm was the longest length used.

Jon, would you share your setup for these shots. I use a 300 as well, on board a 7D, but I have not captured images with such great IQ as these. Thanks

What I do is put feeders out near trees, or actually hang them from trees where direct light will get hit them when I have time to shoot, which is late afternoon/evening. I then park my truck next to the feeder and wait. Usually I will play music to mask the shutter noise as this becomes a distraction at first.

The hit rate gets better when there is competition at the feeders because they pay attention to each other rather than the photographer. Also, I have started to plant trees and flowers that attract them as well. I made a L pattern, with a crepe myrtle as the center of the L. I made an L shape so I can park my truck along side the flowers, plants, and feeders depending on where the sun is.

The adult males have been skittish with me this year. The juvenile males like these have been braver.

    Beautiful shots well executed.
I have been trying to rebuild my Hummer attracting plants. We have a center patio between our 2 houses and if you sit there you can get good shots but when we redid landscaping it stopped attracting the hummers. Feeders get them but numbers are still down.
