Water Polo First Attempt
Yesterday I had an opportunity to try shooting water polo for the first time, although i could not stay long. I used my new Canon 7d and my Canon 70-200 2.8 non-Is lens after upgrading from my 50d a few days ago. Here are a few of the shots. Any input or suggestions would be appreciated since this was the first water polo game I had ever attended.
Thanks

Natural selection is responsible for every living thing that exists.
D3s, D500, D5300, and way more glass than the wife knows about.
Thanks for the input. You are exactly right about the intensity. The photo of the male was done during warm ups since I did not really get to stay for the mens game. I will give it another shot at the next game and focus on the intensity of the game.
I see what you did there. High-five!

I too have just started shooting water polo. I think I found your pics searching for water polo after my first shoot or so. You gave me some good ideas, thanks. Nice shots.
I've had access to a DSLR for many years. I had my own D40 for a couple years, but never 'gelled' with it. I recently got a D90 and am determined to get comfortable with it and with LR3. For the foreseeable future, I'll be shooting a lot of water polo. I've shot three days so far. I've learned some on my own, but am open to C&C for both shooting and PP. I'm going to just post a shot or two from each day. There are a BUNCH in my galleries. I'm open to hear about any of them.
First day (Varsity game. The sun was going down with JV, but there's a gallery for that too.)
The first day I was just sitting in the stands near mid-pool. I found that the ref, people in the stands, people walking by, and the ladder handles were getting in my way. Also, the background was very ugly and distracting.
#1 I cropped this one a few different ways. I landed on this. Not great.
#2 Better shot, but after seeing 1000 more pictures after this, I think I should go in and see if I can crop tighter on the goalie.
When I was making decisions about the first day, I wasn't as willing to cut people out of pictures. I'm more willing to do so now. Agree? I think I was also so enamored by the mid-air-water, I kept more of it than I needed.
Second day
It was an alumni game, so I was more concerned with getting shots of everyone and as many alums with current players as possible. I did try out a better vantage point and I was happy with it (one end of the pool, off to the side from the goal).
#3 Another example of where I think I could have come in closer. I think I was too concerned with not losing part of the ball or a finger.
Third day
First away game. And the first time I realized that there were going to be A LOT of these pics and they were going to look very much alike. I became willing to cut out parts of people and things to make the shots more interesting (I think). I also started to shift from thinking of them as pictures of our players to pictures of the game or the players.
#4 I'm sure the ball was off to the left. I cut it out. I wouldn't have done that during the first shoots.
In general, I'm much happier with the pics from this day.

I was shooting from a similar vantage point this day. I was on shutter priority 1/2500 most of the time all of the days. I switched to a 55-200 VR for a little bit the third day to see if I could see a difference between that and the 70-200 2.8...and I could.
I haven't done much PP besides cropping and a little tiny bit of exposure etc. work, mostly the first and second days when there were very bright items in the background that were distracting. Thoughts on what would more would be good to do appreciated.
